Bettie Orchard

The Joy of Memory: Foolish to Fabulous is Bettie Orchard’s memoir of growing up as an identical twin on an Alberta farm, coming of age amid faith, family expectations, and formative traumas, and then learning—often the hard way—how to choose safety, dignity, and hope. From the freedoms and hardships of rural life and wartime family stories, Bettie moves into early adulthood, marriage, and motherhood, where her husband’s alcoholism and escalating paranoia turn home into a place of fear. A terrifying 1971 confrontation  becomes the turning point that propels her to seek legal protection, leave the marriage, and rebuild her life as a single mother. Anchored by her faith in God, she retrains for work, finds a stable career and satisfying ministry, and reflects candidly on the life God has given her, the resilience of her sons, and the way memory—painful and joyful—can become both warning and gift.
